The Most Famous Restaurant Chains That Failed (For Good Reasons!)
Ever wonder why famous failed restaurant chains like Howard Johnson’s and D’Lites went under? Find out here!
31. La Petite Boulangerie
La Petite Boulangerie, French for “The Little Bakery,” was a chain of restaurants that started off with only two locations back in 1977. Then, PepsiCo purchased the company and franchised it out. In the following years, La Petite Boulangerie started to pop up everywhere. At the peak of the chain’s success, in the ’80s, it had over 140 locations across the United States.
About a decade after the Pepsi purchase, however, many franchisees banded together and sued the company, saying it had misled them regarding profits. Afterward, Pepsi sold the chain to Mrs. Fields Origina Cookies Inc., who sold it to Bewley’s, the owner of Rebecca’s Cafe and Java City. In turn, the company converted all the remaining La Petite Boulangerie by the end of 2000.
