Carrols remains one of the very few failed restaurant chains to turn it around, in a way. The chain of fast food, burger-based joints exploded in the ’50s and ’60s. During that time, Carrols became famous for its signature “Club Burger,” a take on McDonald’s Big Mac. However, by the ’80s, Carrols started falling to increased competition from brands like Burger King and McDonald’s.

So what did the company do? Well, it sold off many of the remaining Carrols locations and turned the others into Burger Kings. Then, the company transitioned into a franchisee company.
