The Platinachrome Company

Named after its founder, Samuel Childs, Childs’ Restaurants became one of the many failed restaurant chains that fell to McDonald’s. Childs’ Restaurants first opened its doors in New York City back in 1889. With a decade, it became the country’s first nationwide dining chain, with Childs’ Restaurants’ popularity peaking in the ’20s and ’30s. At the time, the company was raking in the cash.

However, the world changed in 1940 when McDonald’s opened. Suddenly, slower restaurant chains like Childs’ Restaurants and Horn & Hardart were left in the dust. By the 1960s, no more Childs’ Restaurants existed.
