As soon as Hauser released the video footage and told her story, plenty of skeptics said it was impossible to determine the humpback’s true intentions. And she understands the skeptics. “I’m a scientist, and if anyone told me this story, I wouldn’t believe it,” Hauser admitted.
However, as Hauser points out, whales are omnivores that feed on krill. That means it’s quite unlikely that a whale would attack a human under any circumstance. So, if the whale was not attacking Hauser, why did it continually nudge her away from the tiger shark? So, the marine biologist decided to do some research into human and whale interaction – and she could not believe what she uncovered…
