More recently, scientists have discovered an ancient man called Oase 1. Just like Denny, archeologists uncovered the remains of Oase 1 in a cave, this one in the mountains of southwestern Romania. Also like Denny, Oase 1 lived quite recently, at least compared to most other archaic humans – he lived just 37,000 years ago! And while doing an in-depth analysis of his genome, researchers found something astonishing.
Oase 1 shares nearly 10% of his DNA with Neanderthals, more than any other modern human alive today. While this is not proof positive, it almost certainly means that Oase 1’s parents were Homo sapien and Neanderthal.
