“Pass the Dutchie” by Musical Youth (1982)
Sometimes, a band becomes a legend in one country, and a one hit wonder in another. Just ask Musical Youth! In their home country of Jamaica, the group charted hit after hit in the ’70s and ’80s. However, in the States and the United Kingdom, people only know Musical Youth for one song: “Pass the Dutchie.” And no, it’s not what you think it’s about it! No matter the subject matter, the song rose to number one in the U.K. and number ten in the U.S.
After “Pass the Dutchie,” Musical Youth kept releasing songs until 1985, when they broke up. But, as time went on, the band could not stay apart, reuniting in 2001. Today, Musical Youth continues to release popular songs in Jamaica.
