“Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum (1970)

In the ’70s, singer Norman Greenbaum felt that, at least in his own eyes, too many Americans were losing their spirituality. So, he wrote the hit single “Spirit In The Sky,” a song about the singer’s religious leanings. The song topped the charts in multiple countries across the globe and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the United States.

Ultimately, “Spirit In The Sky” became Greenbaum’s only solo hit. However, he did manage to find success once again as a member of a few other hit bands, including West’s Medicine Show and Junk Band, and Bruno Wolf with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band.
