Perhaps more than any other, the disco era produced quite a few one hit wonders. For instance, even though Cheryl Lynn might not be the most famous face in the music scene, her hit 1978 single “Got to be Real” became a defining moment in disco history. Not only was it Lynn’s debut single, but it was one of the first disco songs that managed to crack both the US R&B charts and the Billboard Hot 100. Afterward, Lynn failed to have any other singles top the charts, leading to her leaving the music business in the ’80s.

Like so many other one hit wonders, a cover of “Got to be Real” might be better known for our younger readers. Legendary singer Mary J. Blige and actor Will Smith covered the song in the 2004 animated movie Shark Tale.
