While researching the history of the castle in Lake Van is of importance to historians worldwide, it does not exactly boost the local economy. So, in order to also give back to the local community, Ceylan also would like to build the castle into a tourist attraction. “I believe in addition to the castle,” he said, “the microbialtes [mud deposits] will contribute to the region’s economy and tourism. It is a miracle to find this casle underwater.”
There has also been talk of building a visitor’s center, possibly near the church. For now, though, work continues underneath the surface of Lake Van, and they’ve only continued to make more amazing discoveries!
