Today, most women still take their husband’s last names after marriage or create a hyphenated version of both names. However, a woman who marries into the British Royal Family knows that they cannot pick their own name. Still, they do receive a royal title, which seems much, much cooler.
While all descendants of Prince Phillip carry the last name Mountbatten-Windsor, those royal who have a specific title, can’t use that last name. So, instead of becoming Mrs. Windsor, Kate Middleton became Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Meanwhile, Meghan Markle became Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
